1) A powerful tornado moves through College Park , Maryland, September 24, 2001. The tornado was rated F3, with maximum winds reaching 175 to 200 mph. It cut a 17.5 mile-long path of destruction through Maryland and caused two fatalities.

2) A tornado and explosion (or lightning flash) silhouettes Byrd Stadium at the University of Maryland, September 24, 2001. The tornado, shown here at F3 strength, moved through the University of Maryland in College Park. Maximum winds were estimated between 175 to 200 mph. There were two fatalities and over 50 injuries associated with the tornado.

3)A well-formed wall cloud and tornado near College Park, Maryland, September 24, 2001. The tornado remained on the ground for 17.5 miles as it moved north-northeast through College Park, Beltsville and Laurel, Maryland. This photograph was taken about six minutes after the photograph above. Both photographs were taken from an 18th floor balcony in College Park, about two miles from the tornado.

4) Tornado moving through Laurel, Maryland, September 24, 2001. The tornado briefly reached F3 strength in Laurel, with maximum winds over 160 mph. Approximately 150 to 175 homes and businesses were damaged in Laurel, including Laurel High School.
